Hearty Wild Rice Pilaf

Wild rice is a nutritious and flavourful grain that can be a wonderful addition to any meal. It has a chewy texture and a nutty flavour that pairs well with a variety of dishes. Here’s a simple and delicious wild rice cooking recipe, including ingredients, directions, and some notes to ensure your dish turns out perfectly.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup wild rice
  • 3 cups water or broth (chicken, vegetable, or beef for added flavour)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • Optional ingredients for enhanced flavour:
    • 1 bay leaf
    • 1 clove of garlic, minced
    • 1/2 onion, chopped
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter

DIRECTIONS:

  • Rinse the Wild Rice: Place the wild rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear. This removes any debris and excess starch.
  • Sauté Optional Ingredients (if using): In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil or butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until they are soft and translucent, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Cook the Wild Rice: Add the rinsed wild rice, water or broth, salt, and bay leaf (if using) to the saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer. The wild rice will take about 45 minutes to 1 hour to cook. Check the rice occasionally and stir to prevent sticking to the bottom of the pan.
